Ashes To Ashes: The Man With The Child In His Eyes

YOU see it unfold with a horrible inevitability.
And then comes the sense of stunned disbelief.
Episode seven of Ashes To Ashes contains a big shock.
I’m not going to spoil the work of series co-creator and episode writer Matthew Graham by discussing the circumstances.
And I would advise fans to avoid any tabloids who may be tempted to run further details about this week’s episode.
Last Thursday’s end titles trailer left viewers with a sense of foreboding about what may lie ahead.
As this week’s episode begins, the Clown warns Alex: “Something dreadful is going to happen. I’m going to take someone.”

After she demands to know who it will be, he places a question mark – written in blood – on her calendar, over the date Wed Oct 7 1981.
That’s just three days away – and a further three days before the car bomb which killed her parents.
Everything, of course, is significant in a gripping penultimate episode.

Here are some other things to watch out for:
1) Gene, Ray and Chris as you’ve never seen them before.
2) The legendary Shaw – “Keep ‘em peeled” – Taylor in the return of Police Five.
3) Guest star Matthew Macfadyen, looking very different, on screen alongside his real life wife Keeley Hawes.
4) Drips of water in CID which only Alex can see…and feel.
5) For whom the bell tolls.
6) The dinner invitation talk is of Dover Sole. But Gene tells Alex: “You want soul? I can give you soul.”
7) The latest entry for Best Use Of A Pink Wafer In Television Drama at next year’s BAFTA TV Awards.
8) Gene telling Alex: “How do you know I don’t have children?”
9) The Manc Lion losing control.
10) More clues about little Alex and the car bomb.
11) A billboard advertising soap.
12) The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe.
Just one week to go – and then the long wait until series two, due on screen in early 2009.
As we’re nearing the end, two episode seven music videos for the price of one this week.

Thanks as always for your very informative blog Ian. They are just as good – if not better – than the end of episode teaser trails.

    Hi Ian
Again wonderful mouth watering Tid bits for thursday,..!!
I take it that as there has not been an official announcment (or did i miss it..?) of a new series of A2A’s its case of ..>You heard it here first…??

  3. Alexandra Slater

Thanks Ian. Now my heart’s well and truly in my mouth! This series just keeps getting better and better.

Thanks for all the comments – always very welcome.
Maria – still waiting for the official announcement of series two but a second series has always been planned and all the signs point to it happening, including Phil talking about filming this summer.

Ian! I’ve heard a horrible rumour that Alex sleeps with Evan in episode 7. Please tell me it’s not true! And if it is true, tell me that Evan turns out to be a baddie. I can’t stand him! Oh, I know. You probably can’t discuss important plot points. But I’m most dismayed by this spoiler!

  6. Ian Wylie

Hi Alexandra – yes, I’ve seen the list of spoilers on another site, one of which is always false. And, yes, you’re right…I’m really sorry, but it’s not my place to comment directly on a list that is the work of other people or give away any important plot details. Don’t be dismayed – episode seven is only a few days away!

All this speculation about episode 7, I think deserve a special blog. I am certain that you received many comments similar to the last one, so it would be very nice that you write something about it after the Thursday. I don’t think that ever before some serial brought so much speculations, discussions and got so many viewers involved like this one. Thank you very much for the great work.

  8. Exciting! I’m glad to see another Matthew Graham script. The others were very good but being from the co-creator, that first episode was fabulous. I think this seventh (and eighth?) will lead up to quite a finalé.

A real rollercoaster of an episode! Thank goodness Alex/Evan didn’t happen!! But I’m puzzled by the pictures of Gene sitting alone at an empty table (from the last blog) and Gene and Alex together at what seems to be the same table (this blog). I had assumed they would be related to the dinner date, but it didn’t happen. Are they from episode 8 or have I missed something?

  10. Ian Wylie

Hi Alexandra – the publicity shots don’t always match exactly with a given scene. But the image in Luigi’s above is from episode eight. More in a new blog very soon.

Ive been stumped for the past week trying to remember the name and artist of the song at the end of episode 7. Ive asked everyone i know and theyre stumped also. Can someone please put me and my friends out of our misery? Ive bought the soundtrack cd and it isnt on that either. HELP!!!!!

Margaret – do you mean episode 7? Or episode 6? If it is, as you write, episode 7, scroll up this page. The answer is above the second of the two YouTube videos – then click on the play icon.
And if you really meant episode six, that track – Japan: Ghosts – is featured via a YouTube video in a previous blog which you can find at:
