Corrie’s Vanishing Act

CORONATION Street’s gobby Janice Battersby has endured more than a few screen insults about her appearance.
But just look at her now – or rather actress Vicky Entwistle, who plays the Underworld knicker stitcher.
You can read more about Vicky’s dramatic new appearance in today’s MEN and how she escaped being axed from the soap.
I spoke to Vicky just before Christmas, when she was rehearsing for her role in panto.
We also discussed Janice’s romantic New Year’s Day surprise – Roger the plumber.

He’s played by Andrew Dunn, who Corrie fans may remember as Laurie Dyson, the landlord of a Blackpool pub where Liz McDonald worked in 2003.
Andrew also co-starred with Victoria Wood in Dinnerladies and played Tony Blair’s former press secretary Alastair Campbell in Bremner, Bird and Fortune.

Janice and Roger hit if off and head for France – a plot device to allow Vicky to appear in her panto.
“I just loved working with Andrew,” Vicky told me. “He came in like a breath of fresh air and I hope he comes back.”
The Accrington-born actress is due back on the cobbles in March, along with screen daughter Leanne, played by Jane Danson.
At least their disappearances are explained. Soap law dictates that others simply vanish into Weatherfield’s black hole.
It was good to see Molly (Vicky Binns) in the Christmas Day episode – but where has she been?
And in recent times we’ve only had token appearances from the likes of Dev, Amber, Maria, Adam, Joanne and Kelly.
Cab boss Lloyd is due back in the New Year. We all know his absence was forced on the show by the personal problems of actor Craig Charles.
But will Lloyd suddenly re-appear in the Streetcars office with no explanation?
Is there a Red Rec Triangle? I think we should be told.
