A Real Bobby Dazzler

DAVID Dickinson has heard all the jokes about his perma-tan, whether it features him being dipped in tea or impersonating a mahogany hat stand.
You can learn the real story about the Cheadle-raised Bargain Hunt star on tonight’s Who Do You Think You Are?
It’s a real Bobby Dazzler and shows a different side to the antiques expert and TV presenter, who is anything but as cheap as chips.

The BBC1 film, screened at 9pm, explains how David was the illegitimate son of Eugenie Gulessarian, a woman of Armenian descent.
“Having found out that I came from this Armenian stock, I’d always wanted to know more about it,” explains David, who was adopted when just a few months old.
“I know I’m quite dark now – I’ve been on holiday – but I do have olive skin anyway and I think there’s a lot that comes from the Armenian side.”

His quest takes him to Istanbul in Turkey via Manchester and Cheshire. And there’s also an emotional visit to the island of Jersey, where his natural mother – known as Jenny (right) – later moved.
Although he eventually traced her, and they swapped letters for 20 years, they never met face to face. She died in 1989, having always refused his requests to be allowed to visit.
David is pictured (above) on the beach at the Royal Bay of Grouville, with Mont Orgueil in Gorey in the background – co-incidentally, one of my favourite places in the world.
In many ways it’s a sad story, but one that demonstrates David’s dignity and the roots which, unknown to him, helped forge his own character.
